Features and selling points for Mandy Allen. Metal Arts Jewelry

Materials:

I make all my jewelry from sterling silver, fine silver, niobium wire and anodized aluminum that I anodize myself. It is extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Whenever possible I use raw materials and findings that are mode in the USA.

Some of the chains on my large necklaces are handmade but most of them are machine made in the USA or Italy and I put my handmade claps on them. Some designs have extension chains so the length can be adjusted from 16” to 18”. All my small pendants come on 18” chains.

The beads and lobster clasps used in some of my pieces are silver plated and made in China

The hooks on all but three of my dangle earrings are niobium which is completely hypoallergenic. The stud earrings are sterling silver with niobium clutches.

The anodized aluminum won’t react badly with skin like nickel, copper, or brass. There is no nickel in any of my jewelry so it’s perfect for people with sensitive ears.

Sometimes customers wonder if my work is made from recycled aluminum, it is not.

Process:

I hand cut or punch all the shapes and form then with a variety of specialized hammers.

What is anodizing?

(Short version) It’s a process that allows me to permanently dye the metal different colors

(Long version) Anodizing is a process in which an electrical current is run through a sheet of aluminum while it is submerged in an acid solution. This stimulates a chemical reaction that forms a microscopic layer on the surface of the aluminum. This layer serves two functions. First, it makes the aluminum stronger and more abrasion resistant. Secondly, it is composed of tiny pores which can absorb dye. I use special dye that is designed for aluminum.

Aluminum anodizing works differently than titanium or niobium so I can get a much wider spectrum of colors. The dyes can be mixed allowing me to crate my own custom pallets. I am one of only a handful of jewelers in the United States that anodizes their own aluminum.

Care:

The dye is permanent and won’t be affected by water, soap, or everyday household cleaners. Some of the colors do fade in prolonged exposure to sunlight. This is not an issue for the jewelry wearing customer, but you should not display my jewelry in a location that gets a lot of direct sunlight.

The anodized aluminum won’t tarnish but the silver components will so if you or the customer wants to polish a piece, they should only use products that say they are safe for anodized aluminum.

The anodized surface is very durable and won’t scratch easily but it can be scratched by very abrasive or hard objects. This is only really a concern for the bracelets.

Custom Pieces

While I’m open to the prospect of creating a line that is exclusive to your store, I don’t take custom orders through consignment or wholesale galleries.
